김수영의 이번 전시는 기억이 어떻게 시각적 기호로 응결되는가에 대한 시선에서 출발하고자 한다. 작가의 작업에 반복적으로 등장하는 ‘글리터(Glitter)’는 작가의 모든 지난 시간을 시적으로 함축한다. 오히려 그가 청년과 중년을 넘어 현시점에서 글리터를 적극적으로 운용하는 이유를 유추해보자면 반짝이던 표면, 현실과 환상이 뒤섞이는 지난 시절의 기억은 현재에도 사라지지 않고, 오히려 시간의 퇴적을 거쳐 하나의 조형 언어로 변주하는 것이 아닐까. 이 반짝이는 물성은 감각과 설명 이후의 의미를 동시에 품으며 화면 위에 자리한다.

둥근 캔버스 안에 배치된 이미지들은 각각 고립된 상징이기보다는, 서로를 호명하며 상관성을 형성한다. 기쁜 소식을 상징하는 카디널, 오즈의 마법사 속 루비 슈즈와 글린다, 반복적으로 등장하는 발레리나의 동작들은 기억 속 파편이자 또 다른 세계로 이동하는 통로로 기능한다. 이 이미지들은 좌우, 혹은 상하로 병치되며 과거와 현재, 개인적 기억과 집단적 서사를 오가고, 시간적 수집(collected memory)은 전시장이라는 공간 안에서 새로운 의미 구조로 재배열 하고자 한다. 반복은 단조로움이 아니라, 기억과 시선의 생산물이 스스로를 갱신하는 방식이다.

1999년을 마지막으로 긴 공백을 가진 이후, 작가는 2020년부터 다시 회화로 돌아왔다. 자연 속에서의 생활, 반려동물들과의 시간, 사계절의 순환은 2023년 전시를 통해 하나의 국면을 이뤘다면, 이번 전시는 그 연장선이 아닌 또 다른 방향 전환에 가깝다. 겨울이라는 계절이 불러오는 달콤하고 향기로운 기억, 그리고 상상력의 회귀는 이전과는 다른 매체와 기법으로 재구성되며, 작가의 세계는 다시 한 번 새로운 장면으로 진입한다.

Kim Sooyoung’s solo exhibition begins with an inquiry into how memory condenses into visual signs. The glitter that repeatedly appears in her work poetically encapsulates the entirety of her past. One might infer that her active use of glitter at this point—beyond youth and into maturity—stems from the persistence of those once-shimmering surfaces: memories in which reality and fantasy intertwined, never fully fading, but instead transforming into a sculptural language through the sedimentation of time. This shimmering material occupies the surface while simultaneously holding both sensory immediacy and meanings that emerge beyond explanation.

The images arranged within circular canvases do not function as isolated symbols, but rather form interrelated constellations that call to one another. Cardinals symbolizing good news, Ruby Slippers and Glinda from The Wizard of Oz, and the recurring gestures of ballerinas operate as fragments of memory as well as passages leading into other worlds. Positioned side by side or stacked vertically, these images traverse past and present, personal memory and collective narrative. Temporally collected memories are reorganized within the exhibition space into new structures of meaning. Repetition here does not signify monotony, but a process through which memory and perception continually renew themselves.

After a long hiatus following 1999, the artist returned to painting in 2020. Life in nature, time spent with companion animals, and the cyclical flow of the four seasons formed a distinct phase articulated through her 2023 exhibitions. This exhibition, however, signals not an extension of that period, but a clear shift in direction. The sweet and fragrant memories evoked by winter, along with the return of imagination, are reconstituted through different media and techniques, allowing the artist’s world to enter yet another new scene.
