라틴어 classicus는 전쟁을 위한 함대에서 비롯해, 스스로 무장하거나 자식을 내보내는 대신 거대한 함대를 준비할 수 있는 계급을 지칭했습니다. 그것은 곧 제1계급, 다시 말해 사회가 가장 신뢰한 중심이자 모범의 표상이었으며, 시간이 흐르며 최고 수준의, 본보기라는 의미로 확장되었습니다. 본 전시는 이러한 개념을 오늘의 회화적 실천에 접목하고자 합니다. 인간이 그림을 그려온 행위—동굴벽화에서 근현대의 회화에 이르기까지—는 끊임없이 시대적인 기록과 자아발산의 욕망을 담아왔습니다.

전시는 회화를 매개로 classicus가 지닌 본질, 곧 본보기가 되고자 하는 창작의 욕구를 재사유 합니다. 이는 단순히 고전적 위계의 계승이 아니라, 작업이 새롭게 정의되고 해체되며 다시 자리 잡는 현장에서 발현해 오는 흐름으로 정하고자 합니다. 감상자는 작품 속에 담긴 창작의 본질과 변주를 목도하며, 시대를 넘어 이어지는 예술의 당위성을 확인하게 됨으로 본 전시는‘Classicus’라는 이름 아래, 문명의 창작 본질과 그것을 둘러싼 미적 지평을 동시대 작가들을 통해 탐색하게 될 것입니다.

The Latin classicus refers to a class that can prepare a huge fleet of ships, not just armed itself or let go of children, in addition to a fleet for war. It was the most trusted center and representation of the first class, or society, and expanded over time to become a top-notch and model. This exhibition attempts to incorporate this concept into today's painting practice. The actions that humans have been painting - from cave paintings to modern paintings - have constantly contained records of the times and desires for self-dispersion.

The exhibition rethinks the essence of classicus through painting, that is, the desire of creation to become an example. This is not just a succession of the classical hierarchy, but a flow that has emerged in the field where work is newly defined, dismantled, and re-established. As the viewer witnesses the nature and variations of creation contained in the work and confirms the justification of art that continues beyond the times, this exhibition will explore the creative nature of civilization and the aesthetic horizon surrounding it through contemporary artists under the name of Classicus.
